Patchwork playmat -

I have prepared a colour explosion for you!

This is my so-called Memory quilt, a quilt made of pieces that each has a story to tell, at least to the maker. It has scraps pieces of new and old clothes: shirts, skirts, mine (of all ages, as of childhood), husband's, grandmother's, mother-in-law's, aunt's ...  just to name few :)

Such cover a fantastic icebreaker for women of all generations and families to talk together:

- Oh! This is a shirt I bought in Paris fourty years ago just after meeing your father
- Ah! This is a piece of your dress when you were two year's old cute baby
- Sweet! You husband wore this shorts when he went for a school for the first time. He was so lovely!
- Mmmm, i think this is a working dress of you aunt, when she found her first job
- I remember this curtain in my child room!
- Ah! Oh! Wow! Hey! A! Yes! Eh?

Myron, this will be a playmat for you, my dear.
Because all THESE STORIES has happened just for you to BE HERE ... and to sit on them with your naked bottom. Enjoy!

- Les Bêtises of Russian Traditional Calendar

Summary. In 1918 Russia adopted the Gregorian calendar, already used by all christian countries. Today, the Russian Orthodox Church still uses the Julian calendar, which differs now 13 days with the Gregorian. BUT since many traditional holidays (such as St Johns Day on June 24 aka Ivan Kupala Day) are linked to the orthodox calendar, we have situation that Ivan Kupala, the Summer Solstice day is celebrated 13 day after the solstice.  What's a mess! For the most curious, I made an explaining diagram in the post.

Grandmother's embrodiery

Hi, hello, privet!
Summary
This post is just to show you a work of my grandma that she did sometimes in 50s.
She says, embroidery was at great fashion at that time. Now, when we struggle for this pillow with my daughter I wonder if one day my great-grand-daughter will struggle for this pillow? And for something I made?

Koupavka rite report

Summary.
This is a report on Koupavka rite as we do it with my daughter for the last four years. We make a doll Koupavka, attach ribbons while making wishes and let her drift on waters of our small river. This time our Koupavka has met a wild duck. My girl had to go to the water and to ask the duck to accompany the doll further down. The price was - the boots full of water and fish :) .... or was it only water?

Summer Solstice, Kupavka doll and diplomacy

Privet! Hello!

Summer Solstice is a major date in the traditional calendars of many cultures. It has been one of the reference dates in the agricultural year.

Like in other Christian countries, Russian pagan celebrations of this period were so strongly implanted in national spirit that the Christian calendar had to accommodate for the feast called Kupala. Kupala was name one of the Slavic pagan gods. Spme time after christianisation of Russia in 988, the Solstice day became a celebration of the St John the Baptist nativity or St Johns day. But people for centuries have been calling this feast the day of Ivan Kupala (Иван Купала).

Just think of the name - Ivan Kupala - and everybody is pleased!
The pagan god Kupala is not forgotten and St John the Baptist is worshipped. Btw, do not be surprised to learn that Russian verb kupat' (купать) means to swim  or to wash. ;)

Fantastic example of diplomacy!

One can writes kilo(byte)s of posts about the Solstice festivities, especially because there were always several distinct celebrations around this date (Rusalki week, Summer Koliadas, Agrippina the Swim, Peter and Paul day).  But what about the dolls?

One of the Kupala rites is Kupavka (Купавка), for which the same-name doll is made.

This doll is made on a wooden cross, according to the usual practises for rite ans protection dolls making. Once the doll is made, you attach colourful ribbons to the spread hands, making a wish for each tighten node. You decorate Kupavka with flowers and herbs.
Once she is charged with your wishes and is made nice, you let her float on the water and let her go and pass your wishes to the forces that will accomplish them.

The home girls - Loukeria

Hello everybody,

Look at this row of dolls.

Let you imagine them sitting at the bench in front of izba and nibbling the sunflower seeds (another tradition to tell you about :). Just could not find a real izba in Belgium to make a shot  :)
They all called Loukeria -

There is one Loukeria, the very first one, that became "the first mother" of all others. She is sitting second from left. Her first body turned to be out of proportions but my daughter loved her so much, that she still is The One to play and sleep with. And I was motivated to improve Loukeria and make her few sisters.
I rectified other Loukerias for proportions and dressed them in traditional Russian costumes that I make out of our used clothing to give the old look and to charge them with the family energy. These Loukerias, themselves made of old tissues, are part of our family.

Here are few old pictures from family album, where girls are posing for camera :)

Apart from her costume, Loukeria embeds plenty of techniques borrowed from Russian traditional doll making. Looking closer, each such turn has a sacral meaning.
  • I minimise the usage of needles and scissors. Only the 'skin' is sewed, so inside the doll does not carry any "pain" energy
  • The doll is not stuffed with material but made of plenty rolled layers. This what gives the rigidity but also it symbolises the inner complexity of our body "made" of many intermixed pieces.
After several dolls, I found a good balance of softness and rigidity for the body. She is not at all soft and light like dolls stuffed with wool or other materials. She has fairly hard head. But she is soft and warm enough to sleep with. This makes her character - friendly, independent, and... being able to sit without support :)
  • Even inside I use red threads - clearly this is symbol of blood vessels + red is protective colour and the crosses made of inter-crossing threads have protective effect
  • No eyes and no face - is a typical attribute of Russian protective dolls. Eyes are known to be the home of soul and spirit. To prevent evil spirits to dwell a doll, no eyes are shown. In addition, a beautiful woman or a girl should have a clear, clean and pure face, don't they.

My personal observation about not having a visage shown is that Loukeria has always the facial expression that you expect, depending on your mood and this contributes to her friendliness and sort of emotional availability. You know, human imagination always complete the picture in the best possible way :)
